Hi and welcome to JoyBinge, a podcast where we discuss good news happening in the world to counteract the bad news being spewed at us all the time. Every other week we talk about the news and during the off weeks, I (Kimmy) talk about other ideas of binging joy. We call these the “mini binges”. And today I want to talk about these mini binges. So let’s binge on some joy! In a mini sort of way...

Over the last 5 mini binge episodes, we have been discussing pursuing your passions and enjoying new hobbies. I’ve talked with some friends and family members of mine about how they’ve gone about doing some amazing things and it’s been great fun! However, while I’m glad that I got to do this and bring in some new stories for you to hear, I’m not really sure where to turn to next.

Before Sinow joined me as a co-host for the News episodes, I was researching news and posting every week. I do all the planning, researching, recording, editing, and marketing for the podcast on my own and frankly, weekly posts are taking their toll. So for the time being, I am putting mini binges on a hiatus.

This doesn’t mean that the daily posts during the week on social media will stop. If you aren’t aware, I post Monday through Friday on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter cool stories about neat stuff going on. I’m trying to be better about taking the weekend off to practice better work/life balance. The links on Instagram don’t work and I know it’s not possible to copy the link on your phone from the Insta post but they work on Facebook! Or if you are on a computer, you can copy and paste the link. Or just google it! My aim with these posts is to highlight the good stuff being reported so you can enjoy these breaths of fresh air with me.

But before I put these mini binges on hiatus, let’s go over what we discussed.

  • Having passions and hobbies are important. It can be really difficult to make time for them but it’s a great way to rest from the rest of your life and get refreshed by being involved in something unrelated to everything else.

  • Your hobby doesn’t have to be your passion and your passion doesn’t have to be your hobby. These can be separate from each other. All of our lives look so different so it’s important for you to figure out how this works for you. Test out ideas, try different things and see what sticks! Also remember that hobbies and passions can change. You don’t have to pursue something, especially when it seems like it isn’t working for you anymore. It’s always ok to walk away. That’s part of the joy these things can have in your life! You can decide - you are in control.

  • Education is incredibly important when pursuing a new hobby or passion. The more you know, the more successful you can be. Networking around your hobby is part of education and also building community. We need others to help us succeed, regardless of what that project is.

  • When you have a community around the subject matter of your hobby or passion, you can learn from the mistakes of others and avoid those in your journey. You will still make mistakes but hopefully through talking with and learning from others, you will be able to soar like the eagles!

One other thing we didn’t talk about too much is that it’s ok to scale back on these things. The podcast is a hobby of mine because I was tired of bad news all the time and needed a source for good news. When I didn’t find anything that I enjoyed, I thought, why not do it myself? So here we are. And now that I’ve been doing this awhile, I realized that it’s taking away too much from other parts of my life that I need to focus on right now. This is actually technically the 25th episode counting all the news and mini binges as well as the pilot! That’s nuts!

Some of the things I want to work on now that the mini binges will be put on the back burner are helping my parents get a website and start documenting their journey in building this vineyard (which you can hear all about in Mini Binge #5) as well as renovating a dollhouse John’s aunt entrusted to me. It’s a family heirloom so I’m looking forward to learning how to renovate this beautiful house and make it beautiful again. I plan to post updates in the blog and talk about it on my stream so if that interests you, you can follow along!

And even though the mini binges are on an official hiatus right now, I do want to leave the door open for future mini binges when I think of something worth discussing. They won’t be consistent but I will post them during an off week every now and again.

If you have any reactions to this or ideas for future mini binges, don’t hesitate to reach out! Feel free to email Sinow and I at or tweet at us @joybingepodcast or visit our Facebook page and Instagram account. I look forward to hearing from you! You’re participation with this podcast means a lot to me so know that I will read the comments and messages and respond. I want to know how these episodes affect you and what you think might make them better. I just want to this to be a good show for you.

Thanks for listening today. I know this is a short episode but I wanted to make sure I was communicating with you all about what was going on. I care about the JoyBingers and hope that these episodes can bring a little joy to you during the week. So until next week...go BINGE ON SOME JOY!
